Stonehenge Show Feb. 9, 2012
Dadeville, Ala. – An exhibition of new paintings by Dadeville abstract artist Langley Tolbert, formerly of Montgomery, will be unveiled at a reception, open to the public, at Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery on Thursday, February 9, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The paintings will be on display through mid-March at the gallery located at 1041 East Fairview Avenue next to the Capri Theatre.
Much of the exhibition represents Tolbert’s exploration into unusual creative territory involving the use of acrylic inks on a slippery plastic-coated paper called yupo.
“This is an exciting process because the ink tends not to behave,” said Tolbert. “It wants to slip and slide over the surface of the paper until the air dries it. The ink doesn’t get absorbed by yupo like it would if it were applied to canvas or regular paper.
“You have to be prepared to take advantage of accidental effects,” she continued, “but the beauty is that the inks on yupo paper produce intense, transparent color that can be layered for really interesting results.”
Tolbert’s paintings are part of private and corporate collections and have appeared in numerous juried shows and exhibitions. In addition to Stonehenge Gallery, her work is on display in Montgomery at Gallery East/Peppertree and the Renaissance Hotel.
